Everyone deserves a good chocolate muffin — and it’s even better when it’s a little bit healthier. In this version, the sweetness and structure come from sweet potatoes, a vitamin- and mineral-rich root vegetable packed with vitamins A and C, magnesium, iron, and other good-for-you nutrients.

The rich chocolate flavor comes from raw cacao, which is more aromatic than regular roasted cocoa and a real superfood. Raw cacao is loaded with vitamins (E and C) and minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium, zinc, copper, and sulfur. It’s also a great source of magnesium, which supports heart and brain function, aids digestion, relaxes muscles, and strengthens bones. Magnesium is especially important for active people and athletes, helping maintain healthy muscles. On top of that, raw cacao contains fiber and mood-boosting compounds like serotonin and dopamine — so yes, these muffins literally make you happy!

All the health benefits aside, you should really make these muffins simply because they taste amazing. You can also mix in cacao nibs, berries, or anything else you’re craving.

  1. Peel and dice the sweet potatoes, then boil until very soft. Mash the cooked sweet potato with coconut sugar and coconut oil until smooth. Whisk in the eggs and spices. In a small bowl, combine the baking powder, buckwheat flour, and raw cacao powder, then sift the dry ingredients into the batter while stirring.
